WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you boost in certain stats. Each upgrade increases item level by 3. A random extra substat is also added to each upgrade.

The upgraded gear typically has a greater value for trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or very high stat variance (like Eth titan weapons). Upgrades are not as useful for those with lower requirements due to the need to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enhancements.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities and can be visited anytime to upgrade your gear. To ensure that your equipment is up-to-date it is recommended you visit the upgrader every several weeks.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item upgrader kit, however, they are always cheaper than purchasing new gear. For example upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points while buying a similar item upgrades from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items that are used to upgrade weapons and tools, armor and other items. They can be purchased by players from item upgraders NPCs for a variety of currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased, it can be applied to any weapon or tool using a button, which will show an image of the item at its next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

Upgrade costs differ based on the slot for the Best item upgrader and the current level of the item. For instance weapons cost more than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Some upgrades offer discounts on Flightstones. Once an item Level upgrade is upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currency types.

Many locations have upgraders for their items in addition to the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount as well as a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrades increases depending on the amount of items that are being upgraded. It is also possible to be increased by having players complete specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are only accessible through a variety of methods. This is both a positive and a disadvantage.

In Season 3, many new features were added to the upgrade system. After a player has upgraded to a certain item level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same item upgrade level will cost less. This is even if those items are from a different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed to upgrade is reduced and the discount is account-wide. The amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is also cut and is not available until players have reached certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

When upgrading gear in WoW players have a few choices. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more special and are used for specific item upgrade level upgrades. Crests are an important element of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

The first thing to remember is that crests can only be used to purchase gear of a specific rank, and that each rank has different requirements for upgrading. The most basic and straightforward upgrade route costs 15 crests while the most complex may require as many as 20 crests depending on the type of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through working through content at the appropriate level. This could be done by doing outdoor activities, or by doing dungeons or raids in any difficulty to earn lower-level gear or Mythic+ raid bosses or dungeons that have a high difficulty for endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

The use of these currencies isn't that difficult, but the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. When a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it is no longer required to purchase Flightstones. This is to allow players to get their gear up to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also crucial to choose crests in a wise manner, as they have only one purpose. For instance it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the top gear you have available and keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning on making. This is especially relevant for rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character which will only be able to benefit from the discount for all accounts when all slots are filled with top-quality gear.
