Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items are a frequent and crucial method to enhance the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can be a great source of extra damage or more AD or even more attachments.

Rare-grade equipment is often superior to the more modernized Common or Magic gear due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be used on armor and weapon items. They boost the performance of the item Upgrader Mod that they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. They can also be salvaged by using a professional or higher salvage kits to recover upgrade components from other items.

The amount of damage a piece of armor or weapon can absorb depends on the level of its upgrades. The ability to absorb damage of a piece armor will increase as it is upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. However, it's important to note that this will also increase its weight, causing it to be heavier than it was before.

There are several kinds of armor upgrades that are available in the game and each one has distinct effects. For instance, certain upgrades will grant the armor a certain number of health points while others make it lighter and stronger. The name of the upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade that an item upgrade will be given, as illustrated below.

Some upgrades are magic or a hybrid of magic and technology, which is identified by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges to use, and are indicated by a "Charges" entry in the table below. These charges are either constantly updated or never expire based on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest option to upgrade your armor. You can find it by exploring and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more expensive, however it is obtainable from the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied to high-level armor pieces. These upgrades can give a significant increases in stats and are well worth the investment.

A piece of armor upgraded to its maximum upgrade level will greatly increase its defense values but the wearer must be aware that putting on weight can drastically decrease its agility and speed. This is why it is not recommended to upgrade armor pieces above +9, since the defensive boost gained is typically not worth the extra weight and power cost of the improvements required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to increase the effectiveness of specific aspects of the weapon. Upgrades can improve the accuracy of a rifle, or the damage caused by shotgun shells. Certain firearms also have upgrades that improve their innate capabilities. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and reduces the risk of weapon overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).

The majority of weapon upgrades require a whetblade. It's one of three Power Dices and a different amount Minerals and Erons. These can be obtained by doing side quests, or killing a certain amount of bosses or monsters, or through the Weapon Upgrade NPC located in Central Flarine.

To upgrade a weapon, equipment set piece, or Whetblade you need to visit the NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade items fee of a certain amount of Bars. The more bars required to complete an upgrade the higher the level. The cost of upgrades will be lower if you have more than one of the upgrade items materials.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade your weapon and equipment sets has changed. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5 you could upgrade your weapon and equipment by paying a certain number of Bars. You could continue doing this until you reached the max upgrade level of the equipment or weapon, after which the upgrades would reset.

You can still do this, but the process is high on RNG and low on agency. Instead, you're much better off going to stores and buying gear with low upgrade levels, but good base scores and stat distributions. These gears have a greater chance of giving you the most prestigious tier of blessings and perks.

Most players will want to prioritize upgrades to the weapons they most often use to allow them to progress quicker. Players should also upgrade the weapons that their teammates use to make them stronger. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R, which will enhance its effectiveness when paired with biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to boost the stats of a character or to provide additional effects in armor and weapons. They can be created using an process known as jewelry crafting, where you combine a gem with a number of specific ingredients at a table for jewelry. The higher the level of the gemstone, the better the secondary effect. These reagents are available from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses around the world, or by finding Legendary Gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The Jeweler can enhance the quality of gemstones in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. The stat boosts will vary depending on the tier the jewel is at when it's inserted into jewelry, weapons or gear.

The Jeweler can craft all kinds of gems, with the exception of rare and legendary ones that you must be at certain levels to gain. Like other upgrade components jewels are able to be swapped with another identical jewel without destroying it. However, you can only replace one jewel in a piece of equipment once.

The use of more jewels in a movement will make it feel smoother and is typically done to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. The jewels can also enhance performance and create a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not cause damage to them.

In addition to the above upgrades players can also get glyphs for their shields and weapons from a Glyphmaster. These glyphs provide a small boost and can be freely swapped, but they're not guaranteed to appear as loot. Glyphs are like jewelry and can be upgraded by the Jeweler to exchange gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis, are not swappable, and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are a great way to give your character many small, but beneficial, advantages. They can be acquired starting in the starter areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, or by completing road interactions. They can be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket players will unlock is the cloak. It grants a small but beneficial boost in speed of movement and the ability to evade. The player will then be able to acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets, in a similar way as they did with weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with an upgrade slot that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced and only work with certain trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This lets the hero perform better when they are not active and may also help fill in the void of a strong team or the absence of any slots in the talent tree that would normally be filled with the hero's Best item upgrader stats.

A good general rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you won't be replacing in the near future, then any items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the item that is being upgraded. This is especially true if you're looking to upgrade several stats on an item. It's more beneficial to upgrade a single important stat instead of two subpar ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red trinket at the start of the game. Mid and top players on the other hand, will choose a green or a pink ward, based on the matchup. These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's map control abilities.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players may also find a number of other trinkets in the game in the form of awards and trophies. These can be obtained through completing certain milestones within the story. For example, completing a chapter’s main quest or defeating an opponent. You can view them by selecting the achievement from the reward section of the hero's menu.
