In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or an unfire when in the gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly if they're an Bosch model like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of problems in your car. It's an essential component of the audi key's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those two pins. This part is common across the audi etron key 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
