Pro_Keys_MIDI.jpgA restaurant customer was shocked after a server claimed her 35 percent tip 'didn't count' because it was from a gift card.

The stunned restaurant goer who calls herself Tiny Sparks on TikTok explained the entire situation in a video she posted this week.

According to the TikToker, she and an unidentified friend spent between $28 and $30 after they purchased coffee and breakfast.

Once the server gave her the check, Sparks told the waitress to use the remaining $40 that was on the gift card she brought with her.

The waitress then handed Sparks the receipt and started a heated conversation with the TikToker for not properly tipping her.

According to Sparks, while she and her friend were getting their stuff together, the waitress wished them a nice day when they were about to walk out.

Things turned ugly after the server looked at the table and said: 'I don't know if you guys know this, but it is really rude not to tip your server.'

The waitress left Sparks confused, and it made her believe there was less than $40 on the gift card.

'She goes, "No, it doesn't count if it's a gift card",' Sparks said.

The server acknowledged the $11 left over on the card but insisted she needed Sparks to also tip her in cash.

'I was like, "I don't think that's how gift cards work..." Maybe she's right - does that tip not count if it's from a gift card,' Sparks said.

Their conversation continued, and the waitress ranted that she had to wake up 'really early' to be at the restaurant for her morning shift, and that she should be tipping her cash at 11:30 in the morning.

Sparks assumed the tip was accepted after the server did not return the gift card, and wrote that she thought the server just wanted more money in the video's comment section.

Despite what Sparks' server said, customers can tip with gift cards most of the time.

Sparks' 35 percent tip was also generous since the average restaurant tips are between 15 and 20 percent.

There are various things customers can do to avoid any tipping mayhem, while leaving the restaurant with a positive experience.

One important thing to do before the gift card tipping is communicate with a server, and let them know how they intend to give a tip.

Sparks did this as soon as the server came out with the check, and based on her story, the employee never said she couldn't do that.

Other important tips when dealing with gift cards are to have the tip match the bill total, check its balance beforehand, and bring cash just in case something goes wrong.

Sparks' server ignited a heated discussion about the TikToker's tipping method, and insisted that her tip should've been in cash

Several commenters claimed to be former or current restaurant servers. Nearly all of them said that a customer can tip with a gift card

Multiple TikTok users who watched Sparks claimed they were former or current servers, and claimed gift cards do work.

'It does count. It's the same as using a bank or credit card. I used to wait tables. These new servers are insane,' a TikToker wrote.

Another person wrote: 'At my restaurant, it doesn't let you tip on a gift card, but in this case we would keep the card to use the balance for our meals. It's the same difference as cash.'

Other TikTok users who sided with Sparks wrote that if this were to happen to them, they would've either taken it away or lowered it to 15 percent.

One TikToker commented: 'I would ask for the gift card back and leave $5.'

None of the commenters were angry with Sparks' actions, but a few of them explained why it would be best to have a backup plan in the future.

'Some restaurants don't let you take the tip off the gift card at least that's what I have had to deal with. When in doubt just always be prepared to have cash tip on hand life is just easier that way,' wrote a TikToker.
