Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an attempt to return to the classic sextet structure, and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloned previously recorded performances.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out just a few months later and the group embarked on a world-wide tour to promote it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before.
