WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by +3. A random additional substat is also increased with every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are not as important for those with lower requirements due to the requirement to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item Level upgrade upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. However, the item upgrades used to upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every several weeks.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item upgrading but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new gear. For instance, upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points, while buying a similar item from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that are used to upgrade weapons, tools, armor, and other accessories. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased it can be used on any weapon or tool using the help of button, which displays an item's preview at the next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the item slot and the current item level and the weapon's price is higher than bracers or gloves, for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Some upgrades give discounts on Flightstones. Once an item upgrader mod is upgraded to a certain amount, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Many locations offer item upgraders, including the main Island and some outposts. The NPCs offer an upgrade coupon and the chance to obtain the latest recipe. The discount for upgrades increases depending on the amount of items being upgraded. It can also be boosted by requiring players to complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead, the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades are acquired via several methods, which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system has been tweaked a bit, with several new features added. Crests

This change is designed to allow players to get their equipment to the highest level possible on all their characters, rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests have one purpose and it's crucial to make use of them in a responsible manner. For instance, it's a good idea to make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the Best item upgrade equipment you have and save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you're planning to create. This is particularly true for items like trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character, which will only be able to avail the account-wide discount if all of the slots are full of high-quality equipment.
