The station this time is Strasbourg, the central city of the Alsace region in northeastern France. I have visited Strasbourg four times in the past. The first time was in early January 1993, when I started my trip with a friend from Paris, traveled to Belgium and Luxembourg, and stayed there for one night on my way back to Paris after entering Germany. The second time was in the spring of 2002, when I stayed at the station for a short time while changing trains on my way to Colmar, also in Alsace. The third time was in February 2007, when I stayed there for two consecutive nights and thoroughly explored the old town. During my consecutive nights, I also enjoyed day trips to nearby Nancy and Baccarat. The fourth time was in the fall of 2008, when I was changing trains on my way from Basel in Switzerland to Gare de l'Est in Paris, so I can't really say that I "visited" there.

In the end, both times I was able to calmly walk around Strasbourg were in the middle of winter. I can only say that I'm a bit of a stranger. I'm sure I would have had a better impression and enjoyed it more if I had visited in the warmer seasons. Historically influenced by neighboring Germany, Strasbourg's buildings have a somewhat German feel compared to other parts of France. The Alsatian language, which is becoming obsolete these days, also sounds very similar to German. The following travel blog is about a visit I made in February 2007. Please take a look if you have time.
