Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Upgrades to items allow players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, boosting its stats base or adding additional perks. To upgrade an Best item upgrade, a player has to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important changes from previous versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a certain number of times before they are "leveled out." The cost for upgrades increases with each level however the materials required do not increase as much. This allows players to focus their efforts on a handful of essential items and maximize their impact rather than spreading out the upgrade costs across multiple items.

This will allow the item to receive new upgrade components, and have a greater chance of success. This bonus is called the Artisan's Energy. It will reset to 0 if the upgrade fails or increases when the upgrade succeeds.

If an item level upgrade fails to attain its maximum level, the NPC grants the player the option to transfer it to a different character and re-infuse the item with a different set or upgrades.
