WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you an increase in specific statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item upgrades by +3. A random substat is also boosted alongside each upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the need to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by giving the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities, and is accessible anytime to upgrade your equipment. To keep your gear current it is recommended you visit the upgrader every few weeks.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item, but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest up to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. A similar item upgrades will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are functional items that are used to upgrade weapons and tools, armor and other items. They are purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for various currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any tool, weapon or armor. The button will display the item's next upgrade level, in the event that there are enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item level upgrade and the current level of the item and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers, for example. Each step costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Some upgrades give discounts on Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currencies.

Upgraders for items can be found in many places including the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount as well as a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The upgrade discount increases according to the number of items being upgraded. It is also possible to be increased by requiring players to complete specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only available through a variety means. This is both a benefit as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3 the upgrade system has been modified a bit, and several new features added. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a specific level of an item for a specific armor slot, upgrading additional items to that same Item level upgrade level will be less expensive, even in the event that they belong to an entirely different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed to upgrade is reduced and the discount is account-wide. In the same way, the amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

When upgrading gear in WoW, players have a couple of choices. Flightstones are an item that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specialized and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an integral part of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System introduced in version 10.1. They are available in four ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests are only able to be spent on gear of a specific rank, and every rank has different requirements for upgrading. The most basic and straightforward upgrade route costs 15 crests while the most complex can require as much as 20 crests, based on the type of equipment being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through finishing tasks at the appropriate level. This could mean doing outdoor activities or taking on dungeons and raids of all difficulties to get equipment of lower tier or Mythicbosses for raids, or dungeons with a heroic difficulty for endgame gear. The crests can then be exchanged with an upgrader for the item upgrading such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and paths.

The use of these currencies isn't too complicated however, the system introduces some changes to the overall upgrade process. For example, once an item is at the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest possible level for all their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another notable change is that crests only have one purpose, so it's important to use them wisely. It is best to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear that you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is especially relevant for rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character, which will only be able to avail the account-wide discount when all of the slots are filled with high-quality gear.
